In today’s video, I’m going to talk about using the new section tool in SketchUp to generate a floor plan with both lineweights and shading in Layout.
New Tool Functions –

#1 – Naming Sections

  • In SketchUp 2018, you can both name your section cuts, as well as add a symbol to your cuts that is visible in your model. This way, you can keep your cuts organized and have a visual indicator of which cut you’re working with.

#2 – Managing Sections in the Outliner

  • In the 2018 version, you can now use the outliner to manage your section planes. Not only can you use it to manage visibilities of sections (which are on, off, etc), you can also use it to manage your section cut names and symbols as well.

#3 – Adding section fill with Styles

  • This is a feature that has been long awaited. You now have the ability in SketchUp 2018 to add fills to your section cuts using the style manager. You can adjust the visibility of fills, along with the color of the fills that you add. Hatching is still not available, just the ability to fill the interior of your sections is a great new feature!

#4 – Adding section lines with styles

  • This is another great new feature – you can adjust the thickness of section cut lines using the styles manager. This way, you can manage lineweights of the section cuts in your model.

All in all, the overhauled section tools in SketchUp 2018 represent a great improvement in functionality from the previous version.
